CASA DE CULTURA (CAN PROHENS)

In 1970 the Town Council of Felanitx purchased the Can Prohens building and completely renovated it, making it the town's cultural centre.

This manor house with the typical division into two main floors (ground floor and piano nobile) plus a third floor corresponds to the traditional building principle of Mallorcan baroque architecture.

A beautiful portal with a round arch distinguishes the ground floor. Next to the portal, a mounting block is still preserved, today the only one in the town. In the past they used it as an assistance to get on a horse. Those blocks were known as colcadors and towards the end of the 19th century they disappeared from the public streets. Continuing the ground-floor layout, there are two windows next to it, and a sundial, the only ornamental element of the façade. Inside, today remodelled and barrier-free, attention is drawn to the entrance hall with a pebble floor and a column in the centre, from which four elliptical arches depart. Family coats of arms are carved into the columns of the hall, as traditionally seen in manor houses of this kind.

Today, the ground floor houses a hall that regularly hosts a variety of exhibitions, as well as the municipal tourist information office.

Nowadays, from the balcony with the iron railing of the piano nobile, the ceremonial speech is made, inaugurating the Sant Agustin (St. Augustus) festival week. On this floor there are offices and a large exhibition hall, named the Miquel Barceló hall.

The third floor comprises an event and concert hall, recently refurbished, with a grand piano. There concerts, theatre performances, meetings, and lectures take place.
