(THE SANCTUARY MARE DE DÉU DE SANT SALVADOR)

This 15th-century sanctuary stands on the highest mountain in the township, and especially worth seeing are the monastery hostel, the image of the Holy Virgin of Sant Salvador, and a Gothic altarpiece

The first church was built in 1348 after the Black Death and consecrated as Passio Imaginis to St. Saviour. The church already existed in the 17th century (it is not known whether this was the original, enlarged one, or a second, new-built one) and had two chapels, the main one consecrated to the Passio Imaginis and the other one to the Holy Virgin Mary of Sant Salvador.

The present church was built between 1707 and 1734, whereafter the image of the Holy Virgin moved to the main altar and the altarpiece of the Passio Imaginis was placed in one of the side chapels.

In 1930 and 1942 the apse was thoroughly refurbished and a new alabaster altarpiece sculpture was crafted. In 1934 the image of the Holy Virgin received the honour of pontifical consecration and the ceremony was celebrated on the forecourt of the parish church. Between 1923 and 1927 they built the present road.

Both the sanctuary with the monastery and the mountain belong to the Diocese of Mallorca. In 1891, the Diocese entrusted the Hermits of St. Paul and St. Anthony with the management of the sanctuary. In 1992 the hermits abandoned the monastery and today there is one person in charge of maintenance.

Celebrations are held on the Sunday after the 8th of September (anniversary of the Coronation of the Virgin) and on the second Sunday of Easter.

The mountain is 509 metres high. On its summit there is a monument consecrated to Christ the King (Crist Rei). The foundation stone for it had been consecrated and laid on the 20th of May 1928.

Peace, wonderful views, a place for prayer, a recreational area, destination of several hiking routes, a restaurant service, accommodation, and a very popular pass road for cyclists.
