Porreres is in the central south El Pla (The Plain) region of Mallorca. It covers an area of 86.8 square kilometres and borders the towns of Llucmajor, Montuïri, Sant Joan, Vilafranca, Felanitx and Campos.

The town takes its name from Guillem de Porrera a nobleman who helped King Jaume I to conquer Mallorca. Since then the land and old Muslim farms have been known as Porreres.

There are currently over 300 businesses in Porreres covering all areas. Historically, the driving force behind Porreres was agriculture. The most symbolic fruit of the town is the apricot, which is why, every year at the end of June, Majorca’s only Apricot fair is held here. Every Tuesday there is a local market in the town square.

The local town fiesta is a celebration in honour of Sant Roc (Saint Roc), between the 9th and 16th of August. It has been celebrated for many years and commemorates how Saint Roc protected the inhabitants of Porreres from the plague.

The people of Porreres are renowned for their perseverance and sense of community; as an illustration of this, on the 14th of February 1954, the whole village came together to build a road from Porreres up to the local Monastery of Monti-sion.
