ES SINDICAT
(WINEMAKING COOPERATIVE)
This industrial building, used for wine production and distribution, is a good example of the important role of the wine trade in the second decade of the 20th century in Mallorca, after phylloxera had destroyed all the vineyards on the island.
The building was constructed between 1920 and 1922, according to the project of the Mallorcan architect Guillem Forteza. For the construction, they used the typical materials of industrial architecture, such as concrete or cement, combined with natural stone. The vaulting system in its interior, which combines pointed and parabolic arches, is outstanding. This technical solution recalls the system used by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi in his buildings, but in this case it has a clearly functional purpose.
The Sindicat building was declared "Bien de Interés Histórico-Industrial" (Industrial-Historical Cultural Heritage). Since 2019, it is property of the island council Consell de Mallorca. At present it is closed to the public and under renovation.
